Del. officials eye expanded child-care checks

State officials are proposing to expand criminal background checks for people working for or with the Kids Department.

The proposed changes would require background checks on all departmental employees, as well as volunteers. Current regulations only give the cabinet secretary discretion to require background checks for employees working in certain divisions of the department.

Officials also want to require criminal background checks for stepparent adoptions, which currently are excluded from the background check requirements for other adoptions.

They also are proposing to expand backgrounds checks for residential child care facilities to include administrative staff.

Officials are accepting public comment on the proposed changes through the end of the month.
