Hamels struggles as Phils' win streak ends
Cole Hamels gave up five runs in just 5 innings of work as the Cleveland Indians earned a split of the 2-game series with a 10-4 win over the Phillies Wednesday afternoon.
The Phillies' opening day starter ran a high pitch count throughout his start, having already tossed 70 pitches in the middle of the 3rd inning when Mark Reynolds' 2-run double to left field put Cleveland ahead 2-0.
Mike Aviles homered off Hamels (1-6) in the 4th inning, and Nick Swisher added a 2-run shot in the 5th inning to complete the scoring against Hamels on the afternoon.
Jimmy Rollins did his best to keep the Phillies in the game with a 2-out RBI single to right in the 3rd, and a 2-run double in the 5th for his first 3 RBI game since April 7, but the Phillies bullpen couldn't keep the game close.
Chad Durbin gave up a 2-out walk and infield single, before Asdrubal Cabrera singled home both both runs off of Jeremy Horst. Raul Valdes gave up the final three runs for Cleveland on a 3-run homer by Jason Kipnis.
Rollins, Carlos Ruiz, John Mayberry, and Delmon Young each had two hits for the Phillies, who dropped back to 19-22 with the loss.
Corey Kluber (3-2) earned the win by giving up three runs in 6 innings of work.
The Phillies take Thursday off before hosting Cincinnati in a 3-game weekend set starting Friday night.
