VIDEO: Jackson crowned the new Miss Delaware
Five women held hands and anxiously awaited to see if their name would be called to become the next Miss Delaware at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino on Saturday night.
WDEL's Gianna Banner has the story.
And the winner is...Miss Dover Rebecca Jackson.
Jackson, who attends the University of Delaware beat out 22 other beautiful contestants in the 72nd Miss Delaware Scholarship Pageant.
The 21-year-old placed third-runner up last year, but she knew she was ready to come out on top in 2013.
"I wanted it because I know I can do so much for this state," she said. "I know that I'm different. I know that my talent can be used to share music with kids."
Speaking of talent, there was no denying her favorite competition of the pageant.
"Oh you know the answer to that, my favorite's talent. I love being on stage. I love singing and I feel like I can be myself when I'm singing," said the title holder, who showed off her beautiful vocal to "Think of Me".
After two nights of preliminaries, Saturday's pageant began with a Top 11. The last to be named in that 11.. was the winner.
"Pageantry is really, really hard. It takes a lot of work. It takes a lot of passion, and I brought it for Miss Delaware," said Jackson, who never thought she'd ever compete in a pageant.
Jackson, who attended Wilmington Friends School in elementary and middle school told WDEL about her platform called Fostering Music.
"I put on a musical at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington," said Jackson, who majors in Vocal Performance. "The proceeds of that musical were $5,000, and we used that to give foster children books."
Jackson shared a top five spot with Miss Mid-State Alix Gardner, Miss Hockessin Brittany Lewis, Miss Blue-Gold Angelica Nardi, and Miss Capital Victorian Brown-Obrien.
The joyful winner got asked in the interview portion, what would she do if the roles were reversed and she was the judge. What would she look for?
Jackson said Miss Delaware needs to love children, be poised and most importantly be "Miss America ready". She is more than ready and heads to Atlantic City in September to represent the first state in The Miss America Pageant.
