Newark National drops pool play game in Little League regional
David Hawtof's 4th inning RBI single started a rally, but it wasn't enough as Berlin, Maryland defeated Newark National 6-2 in the second game of Newark's Mid Atlantic Little League pool play Saturday night.
The Delaware champions (1-1) trailed 3-0 after three innings, but Jack Hardcastle started the top of the 4th with a single. Eric Ludman then singled, with both moving to 2nd and 3rd after a sacrifice by Jack Owens.
Hawtof then singled to right field, brining in Hardcastle's special pinch-runner Brandon Sengphachanh . Newark cut the lead to 3-2 in the next at-bat with a double-steal attempt where Berlin made the out at 2nd, but Ludman crossed the plate on the play.
Starter Joey Davis was able to keep Berlin off the scoreboard in the 4th, but Tristin McDonough slammed a 2-run homer, part of a 3 RBI night, to give Berlin the breathing room they needed in the 5th. Davis pitched all five innings for Newark, recording 9 strikeouts.
Newark National outhit Berlin 7-6, but will have to wait a day for two more chances to pick up the critical second pool play victory which usually insures advancement to the regional semifinals. Their next game is Monday night at 5pm against the New York champions, while a game Tuesday night with New Jersey also looms ahead.
