Shots fired on UD campus after fight on basketball courts
University of Delaware police say shots were fired at the Newark campus Monday night after a fight between two people playing basketball.
WDEL's Tom Lehman reports:
It happened around 10:55 p.m. Monday at the basketball courts on Laird Campus.
University of Delaware Police Chief Patrick Ogden says a physical altercation occurred during a basketball game between two opposing players.
After the fight was broken up, one of the players returned to his car and retrieved a handgun from his car, Ogden says.
"He shot several rounds at the individual that he was in a fight with and he struck that individual's vehicle at least twice," Ogden says.
The suspect is described as college-aged, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, with short hair. He was wearing dark cargo shorts or cut-offs and an oversize white T-shirt.
Police say four men, including the suspect, left the scene in a silver, four-door compact sedan, driving toward Christiana Towers.
Although UD students were present at the scene, Ogden says it's not clear whether the gunman is goes to the university and notes that such crimes are extremely uncommon on campus. He says there are significantly fewer students on campus because the fall semester has not begun yet.
University faculty and students were notified of the shooting Monday night through UD Alert text and email messages. On Tuesday, the school's communications office distributed an image of the suspect's vehicle in a news release.
"I'm cautiously optimistic," Ogden said. "We have several leads to pursue and I'm confident and hopeful that we're gonna make an arrest."
