VIDEO: Police investigate rape at Wilmington park

Two women are gang-raped in a city park.

WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.

Police tell WDEL the 32- and 24-year-old victims were in Kosciuszko Park in the city's Hedgeville section Thursday night when they were attacked by nearly a dozen boys.

The boys sexually assaulted and raped the women.

Jamaine Crawford with Wilmington PD.

"The juveniles fled in an unknown direction. Now, it's unknown as to whether the juveniles were bystanders, or who, actually committed the assault," says Crawford.

What's more disturbing? The attacks happened before nightfall at 7 p.m. and so far, no witnesses have come forward.

"How does something like this happen in broad daylight?" I asked Crawford.

"That is a good question, that is exactly why we want our community to understand the purpose as to what we're trying to do in the community, which is to try to minimize or eliminate these acts of violence," he says.

Crawford says they're beefing up park patrols.

"Officers on foot, walking through the park, just to ensure the safety of everyone in the community," says Crawford.

Both women have been released from Christiana Hospital.

Community members react to rape in Kosciuszko Park

City Councilwoman Sherry Dorsey-Walker was attending a meeting Thursday night when the incident occurred.

She said to city residents in the park Friday afternoon that she was disturbed by whom police had identified as suspects.

"The young men who committed this heinous act--they are juveniles," Dorsey-Walker said. "It disturbs me that you have 10-12 juveniles committing such a heinous act in a park where children should be playing."

Frank Roberts, who lives on Broom Street across from Kosciuszko Park, said hearing about the crime made him sick.

"It's just a shame all around and it brings a lot of sadness into our community and a lot of angst and we really, really don't need anymore than we have," Roberts said.

Mayor Williams declined comment on the rapes.
