Guilty plea in murder of police officer

Jury selection comes to a close with a guilty plea in the case of a man accused of murdering a New Castle County Police officer.

WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.

The guilty by mentally ill plea means David Salasky can't be sentenced to death.

The Wilmington man is accused of stabbing New Castle County Police Lieutenant Joe Szczerba to death two years ago in September.

"The evidence in the case would have shown two things: one, that David Salasky was criminally responsible for the murder of Lieutenant Joseph Szczerba, and secondly, that he was chronically and seriously mentally ill," says veteran prosecutor Steve Wood.

Wood couldn't say at this time whether this was the outcome he would have liked to have seen in this case.

If Judge Carpenter decides Salasky is in fact mentally ill, he'll spend the rest of his life behind bars.
