VIDEO: DMA claims 1st volleyball tournament victory
Three-seed Delaware Military Academy used 14 aces, including Cassie Kowalski's on match point, to defeat No. 14 Wilmington Christian in straight sets Saturday night.
DMA's first-ever victory in the DIAA State Volleyball Tournament was sparked by an opening four-point run by freshman Sydney Fulton who had two early aces.
Wilmington Christian would turn the tide, ultimately jumping ahead 14-9 after captain Jamie Green went on an 8-serve run of her own.
The Seahawks settled down however as Victoria Taylor stepped behind the line down 17-15, evened the match with an ace, and continued until DMA was up 23-17, on their way to a 25-21 victory.
Kaitlyn Stonkus' kill on the opening point of set helped give the Warriors 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the second set, but a serious of kills by Kowalski, Rachel Weyd, and Taylor catapuled DMA to a 25-18 victory.
Wilmington Christian again jumped ahead 3-1 and 6-3 in the third set, but DMA turned things around again, finishing the set on a 22-8 run to win 25-14.
Kirsten Longueira led DMA with 4 of the aces, with Fulton, Kowalski, Weyd, Taylor and Morgan Andrews each had two. The Seahawks will face No. 11 Tower Hill, a 3-sets-to-1 winner over Caravel, Thursday night at 6pm at St. Mark's.
Lily Kramp had 12 kills and 12 digs for Wilmington Christian.
