VIDEO: Wesley to face FCS foe Saturday
For the second time in three years, the Wesley College Wolverines will get a chance to face a I-AA (FCS) foe on the road.
Saturday's battle with Charlotte comes two years after defeating Big South member Charleston Southern 32-20.
That game saw then-freshman Steve Koudossou take a reverse 77 yards for the opening points of the game, helping to build confidence for the Division III Wolverines.
This year Wesley wants a strong performance as they finish out their schedule and attempt to impress the NCAA Selection Committee which will determine whether the 6-2 Wolverines will make a 9th straight trip to the Tournament.
The 49ers will eventually join the I-A (FBS) Conference USA where its other sports, most notably perennial "March Madness" contender men's basketball basketball, already reside.
They are currently in their first football season, sporting a 4-5 record while playing a tough schedule including four ranked I-AA opponents and Division II UNC Pembroke.
One of those losses was to that Charleston Southern team that Wesley beat two years ago. That program has gone from 0-10 in 2011 to ranked in I-AA this year, with their only loss coming to Colorado.
Turnovers could prove to be a major factor Saturday, as Charlotte is 3rd in I-AA with 25 takeaways, while Wesley is near the top in Division III with 18 interceptions.
The game will be played at Jerry Richardson Stadium, named after the Carolina Panthers' owner who donated money to help build the 15,314-seat on-campus stadium.
You can hear Wesley and Charlotte Saturday beginning at 11:30am on 1150AM WDEL, WDEL.com and the WDEL Mobile App for Smartphones.
