VIDEO: Cooper paces Concord to road victory
Concord's Joe Cooper scored 28 points as the Raiders held on for a 64-57 victory at Howard Thursday afternoon.
Cooper set the tone for Concord with four 3-pointers in the opening quarter on his way to 14 points. Concord led 20-14 after the opening 8 minutes.
Howard fought their way back into the game, with Kineph Turner and Damiere Holloway hitting three-pointers which set up a driving three-point play by Bryan Wright to tie the game at 27 late in the half.
The Raiders scored the last four points of the half to go up 33-30 at intermission, but Howard quickly reclaimed the lead on a nice entry pass from Turner to Elias Revelle. The lead changed hands several times in the final minute of the quarter, before Justin Cunningham beat the buzzer with a trifecta to make it a 48-46 Howard lead going into the final quarter.
The game was stuck tied at 52 for about 90 seconds, but a pair of steals by Joe Cooper which led to fast-break layups turned out to be the difference.
Daquan Smallwood scored 12 points for Concord who won in their first game of the season.
Cunningham's 13 points led Howard (0-2), who also picked up 12 points from Jakir Stewart and 10 from Elias Revelle.
