VIDEO: Carter Road in Smyrna receives face-lift

Renovations to a portion of Carter Road in Smyrna wrap up, improving both vehicular and pedestrian safety.

The $4 million project widened Carter Road and installed curbs, sidewalks, street lights and a drainage system.

Smyrna Mayor Joanne Masten says recent economic growth in the town made the improvements necessary.

"It became abundantly clear that the current road that we had could no longer handle the volume of traffic that we had," Masten said.

Smyrna Town Manager David Hugg says the key to any good community is ease of travel.

"Having a good transportation system that lets people get through and around town effectively and efficiently is important," Hugg said.

The project began in August 2012 and strives to not only improve vehicular safety.

"It makes provisions for pedestrians and bicyclists. It sort of supports that walkable, healthy, pleasant community kind of thing that we are all striving to achieve," Hugg said.
