Pettyjohn proposes gun bill
A downstate Republican proposes a gun bill just days after House Bill 88 failed to be taken back up by the state Senate.
Senator Brian Pettyjohn's bill expands the crime of possession and purchase of a deadly weapon to include the guilty but mentally ill, those found not guilty by insanity, and those who are mentally incompetent to stand trial.
The Georgetown Republican says his public safety bill contains a narrow piece of House Bill 88 that was backed by Attorney General Beau Biden, but Pettyjohn stops short of calling the measure a mental health bill.
The key provision to House Bill required reporting provisions to allow mental health professionals to notify law enforcement when they determined someone was too dangerous to possess a weapon. Pettyjohn's bill does not contain this provision.
