VIDEO: Thieves targeting Hondas in wheel thefts
Thieves have stolen wheels from 15 parked Honda vehicles in New Castle County during the last two weeks, police said.
WDEL's Tom Lehman reports.
Wheels have been nabbed from Honda vehicles in Glasgow, Bear, areas near Newark and along the Kirkwood Highway corridor, said Cpl. Jacob Andrews, a New Castle County police spokesman.
The thieves have been targeting three specific makes of Honda vehicles: Accords, Civics and Fits.
"The unknown suspects are putting blocks or milk crates under the cars and taking the wheels and tires off the car at various times of the night," Andrews said.
The stolen wheels are factory-issued and don't have after-market rims, he said.
"If you own Hondas of any of those makes, just be extra vigilant and try to park in well-lit areas, use exterior lighting when possible and be careful to always lock your doors, but since they're stealing the wheels off, it's kind of a moot point," he said.
Micah Molin with Union Park Honda tells NBC 10 the thefts are less about the rims.
"I don't know if you've gone out to buy a set of new tires recently, but the cost of rubber has gone up, so we think a lot of it is rubber," he says.
Anyone with information on the thefts can call the New Castle County Police Department at (302)-573-2800, email or by texting the key word NCCPD followed by your tip to 847411 (TIP411).
