VIDEO: Appo rallies late to advance to second rd
Appoquinimink's 20 point effort in the final quarter secured a 43-39 victory over Conrad in the opening round of the DIAA Girls Basketball State Tournament.
No. 19-seeded Conrad, making its debut in the playoffs, held 14th seeded Appo to only four points in the first quarter. Conrad led 11-4 at the end of one.
Appo opened the second quarter with nine unanswered points, closing the gap and taking its first lead of the game.
Before halftime, Appo's Naiyana Davis picked up a steal, drove to the basket and dished to Emma Perugini, who scored at the buzzer to give Appoquinimink a 17-15 edge at the break.
But Conrad showed life out of the locker room and regained the lead quickly. Conrad's Morgan Grubb extended the Redskins lead to eight points, when she found the open lane and scored on an easy lay up. Conrad led 29-23 at the end of the third quarter.
Appo trailing by six points early would be short-lived. Appo's Shirle Brown knotted the game at 29. Appo's Davis followed scoring on three straight possessions and the Jaguars outscored the Redskins 20-10 in the fourth quarter.
Davis led all scorers with 15 points, and Brown chipped in 14 points for Appo.
