New author's lesson: You CAN do it

A Newark woman hopes kids learn a valuable lesson from her first book.

WDEL's Mellany Armstrong has more on her in WDEL's Delaware Stories.

K.A. Steed's first book is titled 'We Can't Do It.' The setting? The annual Field Day competition.

"You're gonna walk through the last week of school with first grade as they get the courage and the confidence to compete against third grade," she said.

It's about overcoming fear.

"A fear of third grade, a fear of competing, and a fear of not being good enough or big enough or strong enough," she said.

Her message?

"To use confidence and a lot of hard work to overcome things that seem to be impossible," she said.

Why did she choose to write for children?

"I like their perspective. I like the way that they see and approach the world, and I think there's a lot to say to them," she said.

Steed is planning on 5 or 6 books in the 'Can't Do It' collection.

"It's been such an exciting process to take everything that's in your head and be able to communicate and create," she said.
