VIDEO: Preschoolers encouraged to "reclaim the promise"
Brandywine School District is helping Wilmington's youngest students "reclaim the promise" of a better education for the first time.
On Friday at at P.S. DuPont Middle School, students in Brandywine School District's E-CAP program were treated to food, fun and stacks of books as part of Reclaim the Promise, a program that encourages preschoolers to read and engage with their peers.
President of the American Federation of Teachers Local 762 Karen Kennedy says introducing Reclaim the Promise to E-CAP is the first step towards building a generation of dedicated readers.
"What we want to do is we want to instill a love for reading in children in early childhood education, because that's where it starts. That's foundation," Kennedy says.
Kennedy started off today's event with readings by three administrators, including Superintendent Mark Holodick. Afterwards, students got three brand new books to take home.
