Controversy swirls around Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament
The founder and president of the Slam Dunk to the Beach (SDTTB) high school basketball tournament sends a cease-and-desist order to organizers, who were planning to renew the tournament this winter at Cape Henlopen High School.
Bobby Jacobs sent the letter via certified mail to the Delaware Sports Commission and to all schools that have been invited to take part in the tournament, which was revived after a ten-year drought.
Jacobs spent time in jail over financial misdoings related to the tournament.
He maintains in the cease-and-desist order that the commission and Position Sports are committing "fraud," and he encourages high schools to start scheduling replacement games, if they planned to send teams to the tournament.
The Delaware Sports Commission announced 14 of the 15 teams that are scheduled to compete in the December tournament last week. At that event, Dr. Matthew Robinson, Chairman of SDTTB was asked how the tournament would regain trust...
"A lot of parties have put their faith in us to do it the right way, and we take that seriously. We want to live up to those expectations, and we want it to be done in a first-class way, and we want all of our parties and partners are treated the right way, and to be happy at the end of the day."
In a written statement, the media director of the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament tells WDEL: "The Slam Dunk to the Beach will take place as planned on December 27-29, 2014 at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, DE. All legal questions should be directed to our legal counsel."
WDEL has a call into that legal counsel for comment.
A search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office's website shows that the Delaware Sports Commission registered the word mark "Slam Dunk to the Beach" and logo (see picture) on September 27, 2013. It was done for the purpose of "Organizing, marketing, conducting and operating basketball tournaments; entertainment both live, as well as television and internet content in the nature of basketball games."
