Teen convicted in downstate kidnapping, carjacking

A jury quickly convicts a teenager on charges of kidnapping and carjacking an elderly woman who was locked in the trunk of her car for two days before she was dumped in a Seaford cemetery.

Rondaiges Harper was found guilty Thursday in Sussex County Superior Court in Georgetown.

"What was also disappointing was that the jury was out in 30 minutes; they came back, and they're also not supposed to give sympathy as part of their deliberations, and it was hard probably not to with the age of Ms. Smith, now being 90 years of age," defense attorney John Brady told our sister station, Delaware 105.9

The conviction comes even after Smith was unable to identify Harper, who was in an orange jumpsuit, in the courtroom.

Harper is the first of three teens to be tried as adults in the case. A fourth teen plead guilty.

He faces up to 50 years in prison.
