Senate leader Thurman Adams dies

The President Pro Tem of the Delaware Senate has died.

Senate officials said Adams, a Bridgeville agribusinessman first elected to the Senate in 1972, died Tuesday morning at Kent General Hospital in Dover.

Adams was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after entering the hospital on June 16.

Adams, a graduate of the University of Delaware, owned and operated T.G. Adams & Sons, a family feed and grain business.

Adams served on the state highway commission and chaired the governor's safety committee before being elected to the Senate, where he served longer than any other lawmaker. He was named Senate majority leader in 1999 and became president pro tem in 2003. Adams would have turned 81 next month.
