Word that the Hares Corner postal processing center will stay open comes from longtime USPS administrative clerk Tom Minor, who tells WDEL he just emerged from an employee town hall meeting with the good news.

"We will not be consolidating Hares Corner with South Jersey or Philadelphia. That proposal's completely off the table because as far as this study's concerned they decided that was not the best way to go," Minor tells WDEL.

A proposal issued several months ago had pinpointed the Hares Corner facility for closure though Minor says the USPS is acting independently from Congress at this point.

Minor tells WDEL the whole room erupted into applause when they heard the news.

He credits, Senator Carper's efforts, the public outcry, and the meeting held at a New Castle school last month.

"The public has spoken, and the U.S. Postal Service has listened," says Minor.

Delaware's Congressional delegation were quick to hail the decision to keep the Hares Corner postal facility open.

Senator Carper tells WDEL News he, along with Senator Coons, Congressman Carney and Governor Markell, convinced the Postal Service that processing this area's mail at Hares Corner is a more cost-effective option than what the agency had planned.

Carper, Coons, Carney and Markell Wednesday issued statements praising the decision, and Markell thanked the lawmakers for, in his words, "leading a broad-based and aggressive effort" to keep the Hares Corner facility from closing.
