By Mellany Armstrong Share

A bicyclist is seriously injured in a DUI hit-and-run crash.

State police say 44-year-old Gary Johansson of Hockessin was riding his bicycle northbound on the shoulder of Route 48 Thursday around 5 p.m. Police say a car driven by 20-year-old Travis Sherwin of Atglen, Pa., drifted onto the shoulder behind Johansson and hit him, throwing Johansson off the bike. He's in Christiana Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say Sherwin drove away, but witnesses followed him and let police know where he was. Sherwin was stopped on Yorklyn Road, where police found packages of heroin and a hypodermic needle in the Toyota.

Sherwin is charged with vehicular assault, DUI and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries. He's in Howard Young Prison in lieu of bail.
