VIDEO: Markell honors UD Women

Delaware Women's Basketball wrapped up a week of honors by meeting with Governor Markell Thursday afternoon at Legislative Hall in Dover.

Markell, along with the State Senate and House, acknowledged the record-setting season by the hoopsters who went 31-2, winning their first ever CAA conference tournament title, and NCAA tournament game. He said "obviously we're all proud what they did on the court, but we're also proud for what they did off the court."

Delaware averaged a program-record 3,906 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center last year as the hoopla surrounding the team grew. The team's final home game against Northeastern was seen in front of 5,083 patrons.

Elena Delle Donne, the team's first-team All-American star says she's been blown away by the support. "We knew everyone was excited and behind us, but to see it like this has been awesome. it really motivates us for next season to do more."

Earlier in the week, the Blue Hens were invited to visit Vice President Joe Biden at the White House, and also at the Naval Observatory.

Delaware loses just 4 seniors off of their 2011-2012 team, none of whom averaged more than 15 minutes per contest.
