Schwartzkopf talks about sheriff powers bill

State House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf says Sussex County's sheriff is mistaken in thinking he and his deputies can make arrests.

The Rehoboth Beach Democrat and former state trooper tells WDEL News sheriff Jeff Christopher thinks he's something he's not.

In Februrary, the state Attorney General's office ruled county sheriffs and their deputies, who in Delaware mostly process court papers and conduct foreclosure sales, don't have the power to make arrests because they're not trained as police officers.

Schwartzkopf says he introduced House Bill 325 Thursday to make clear that sheriffs and their deputies aren't cops, and did so after a Sussex County deputy improperly detained three teens who were hunting in Redden State Forest.
