Gatewood doesn't believe her being a newcomer will hurt her chances to win, or her performance as mayor, saying she's a quick learner, and someone who has no problem meeting with the people in the General Assembly whose help she'll need for city issues.
She also says she doesn't need to seek a spot on city council before running for mayor, because each candidate should run for the office that suits him or her the best.

Gatewood says she's concerned about crime in the city, and supports a move towards more community policing.
She also believes the city deserves its own high school, and students from Wilmington shouldn't have ride buses to Newark or Glasgow for high school.
