Papelbon serves up homer in 9th for Phils' loss

Mets pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin hit a 2-out, 3-run home run off of Jonathan Papelbon to give New York a 5-2 win over the Phillies Monday night.
Charlie Manuel chose to bring his usual closer into a 2-2 game to start the top of the 9th, and Papelbon responded with a strikeout to Daniel Murphy. Ike Davis then was able to draw a walk, and after a Justin Turner punch-out, replacement catcher Mike Nickeas doubled to the wall in left to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Valdespin then delivered the long drive to right field to put the game away.
The blast was Valdespin's first career hit, home run, and RBI.
Jimmy Rollins started the game in style for the Phillies, after Halladay threw a perfect 1st inning, the centerfielder doubled, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by John Mayberry, just his 3rd RBI of the season.
Placido Polanco doubled the lead in the 2nd when a Carlos Ruiz walk was cashed in by a double for Polanco's 6th run batted in of the season. However, the Phillies would manage just one hit over the next 4 innings despite 3 walks to keep the game close.
While the Phillies offense struggled, the Mets were able to get to Halladay in the 6th with a 2-out rally to tie the game. After a walk to Andres Torres following an 0-2 count, Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled, and both scored on David Wright's double. Wright has reached safely in 24 of 26 games this season.
Philadelphia had chances in the 7th and 8th off of the Mets bullpen, collecting two hits in both frames, but a double play off the bat of Hunter Pence in the 7th sniffed out the first rally. With one out in the 8th, Freddy Galvis hit a comebacker to Bobby Parnell, who flipped to catcher Josh Thole, just as Ty Wigginton slid in, with his shoulder making contact to the back of Thole's head. Thole recorded the out, but laid on the ground for several minutes before being helped off the field.
Roy Halladay pitched 7 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, but did not receive a decision. He has now gone 4 straight starts without a win, the longest run of his Phillies career. Niese overcame his early struggles to give up just 4 hits and the 2 runs in 5 innings despite walking 4. Papelbon dropped to 0-1 with the loss, with Tim Brydak improving to 1-0. Frank Francisco earned his 8th save.
The loss is the Phillies 7th straight in a game started by a left-handed pitcher.
