Outgoing state Education Secretary Lillian Lowery says the Superstars in Education Awards are a rare opportunity for teachers to be recognized for their hard work and achievements.
"So many times we hear about the challenges, but there are lots of opportunities and there are lots of people out there in our schools, who are seizing those opportunities to be really visionary in their work and engage students and teachers in ways that we don't normally think of," says Lowery.

This year's winners hail from up and down the state for a number of programs, including mentoring and absence and recovery work.
Lowery says this is their night to shine.
"It's great for the community to see that our K-12 public schools really are being thoughtful about the work they have to do with our," Lowery says.

This marks Lowery's last Superstars in Education Awards before she takes her new job as Maryland's Superintendent of Schools.
"It really is sad. Mixed emotions here because I've learned a lot, and what a great way to have one of my last evenings here celebrating the good work that's going on across our schools and districts," says Lowery.

Lowery tells WDEL if Maryland doesn't have an awards program like the Chamber's Superstars in Education Awards, she'll have to borrow from Delaware.
Lowery begins her new post July 2nd.
