UD officials talk STAR campus, diversity

University of Delaware's president updates board of trustees members on planned campus expansions.

UD President Patrick Harker said development is underway to expand the school's campus at a board of trustees meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Harker says the new Science Technology and Advanced Research campus, built on the site of a former Chrysler plant, will help the school develop biomedical and energy technology.

He says the recent arrival of fuel-cell producer Bloom Energy at the site will help add hundreds of jobs to the community despite current economic hardship.

The plant is scheduled to open in 2013.

Officials also said the incoming freshman class at UD will be one of the most diverse in school history.

Outgoing admissions director Lou Hirsh says almost one fifth of the class of 2016 will include of students from groups that are currently under-represented at the college.
