State Police say charges are pending after a crash in Middletown that left a man critically injured Friday afternoon.

Police say Michael Cook was driving southbound on Summit Bridge Road near Old School Road around 4:20 when he didn't stop in time to avoid rear-ending a tractor-trailer in front of him.

The front of Cook's SUV became wedged under the big rig, trapping Cook for about 45 minutes before rescue workers could save him.

Cook was taken to Christiana Hospital, and Summit Bridge Road was closed at the scene for about 2 hours after the crash, which police say is still under investigation.
