Delaware's Statement on CAA changes
The following was sent to WDEL Sports by Dr. Bernard Muir and Delaware Thursday afternoon following Old Dominion's announcement of leaving the Colonial Athletic Association for Conference USA.
"The University of Delaware will not waiver from its path to prominence and pursuit of excellence. Part of that pursuit is a firm commitment to provide a robust intercollegiate athletics and recreation services program for our students. We remain focused on our student-athletes and assuring they can flourish and reach their potential both in competition and in the classroom.
We are fully aware of the impact recent conference alignment announcements have had on the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics.Historically, as well as today, UD approaches any exploration of conference realignment very seriously and with a process that is thoughtful, inclusive and research-based. President Harker and I are leading an internal team that has been engaged in a thorough evaluation of the evolving conference realignments and the implications for our student-athletes and the University. Obviously, we approach this process carefully and methodically and are working to appropriately assess all options before arriving at a decision. This due diligence process requires time to compile and review historical conference data, assess financial and personnel information, understand NCAA, conference and legal implications as well as appropriate potential transition plans and to make a recommendation to the UD Board of Trustees.
We remain committed to the vision we have described in our Athletics and Recreation Services strategic plan, including recent improvements to our facilities for intercollegiate and recreational athletes, academic support enhancements, and significant investments to provide a great game-day experience for fans to events on our campus. On behalf of our coaches, support staff and University administrators, we will stay true to UD traditions and ensure that it thrives to benefit Blue Hens for generations to come.
We appreciate your patience and support as we continue to work diligently to successfully implement our vision on the field, on the court and in the classroom."
