Affordable housing bill passes House, heads to Senate
By Frank Gerace

A bill that passed the state House Thursday would encourage construction of affordable housing for the disabled.

House Substitute 1 for House Bill 227, sponsored by Middletown Democrat Quinn Johnson, would set up a voluntary system by which builders would decide which universal design features, including barrier-free shower stalls, bigger bathrooms, wider doors and hallways, and luminous light switches, they'll install in construction projects funded by the state or federal governments.

The bill, which passed by a 28-to-1 margin with seven members voting and five absent, now goes to the Senate.
