Bayhealth breaks ground for new emergency dept. in Smyrna

Bayhealth Medical Center officials say their new Smyrna-Clayton emergency department will save time, and most likely, the lives of seriously-ill or injured patients.

Emergency department Director Patricia Fuller tells WDEL News the new facility will mean quicker access to treatment for patients from the Smyrna area.

Fuller says research shows about 63 hundred emergency patients each year come to Bayhealth's Kent General Hospital from the Smyrna-Clayton area.

Ground was broken for the new 40 thousand square-foot building Monday, and Fuller says it should open late this year.
