The Youth Service Challenge, launched nationally by the Jefferson Awards, focuses on three issues: ending hunger, conserving the environment, and encouraging health and wellness.

Marissa Lelli, a senior at St. Elizabeth's High School, came up with an idea for an old Christmas Card collection for St. Jude's Ranch that netted 6-thousand cards.

She calls it her "baby."

"The kids at St. Jude's Ranch, they tear off the old back, and then put a new back on, and then they get sold in packs of 10, so it's good for the environment, and then it gives the kids something to do to raise money," says Lelli.

Students at Ursuline Academy threw a Christmas party for members of the ARC Foundation that helps people with developmental disabilities. People, who otherwise, may not have gotten to celebrate the holiday.

"The party was great. Santa Claus showed up, and that's the highlight whenever we have this party, and we as students go and mingle with them, we sing Christmas carols, and it's just a great day, and it's never a push to have everyone come; everyone wants to be there.

Mayor Baker says he's amazed by Lelli and and other winners from Padua Academy, Ursuline Academy, and the Delaware Adolescent Program.

"A lot of students don't get involved in anything but the next party, the next game, so you should be congratulated for going above the call of duty," says Baker.

Padua Academy was recognized for holding a Dress Down Day to benefit the Pearce Q Foundation, an organization set up by student Pearce Quesenberry, who's a survivor of brain cancer.

The Delaware Adolescent Program was recognized for its nutrition program for pregnant and parenting teens.
