Video: Racing cardboard kayaks in the name of science

Eighth graders at P.S. duPont Middle School see if their scientific theories hold water.

Nearly two dozen cardboard kayaks raced across the pool in the school's second Cardboard Boat Regatta.
Hewitt Hallberg of Team Boat describes his creation.
"We used three, no, two and a half rolls of duct tape, plastic material and zip ties to hold it together," he said.

STEM teacher John Singer says the kids learn Archimedes principle, buoyancy, and math.
"There's a lot of things that go into making a cardboard boat, but most of all, it comes down to the day when we race them and we have all the fun, and it makes it worth it," Singer said.

Some boats didn't make it.
"It kind of got a lot of water in it, and we kinda sunk sideways," said Armanti Harden.

The winning team, Awesome Swag, set a speed record of 48 seconds and got to push Singer into the water.
"I'm wet!" said Singer.
