Rep. Brad Bennett (D-Dover)
Dover Democratic Rep. Brad Bennett will NOT seek re-election after his second DUI arrest.

The tearful announcement came Tuesday on the House floor as the General Assembly reconvened for its final four weeks of this session.

"I hope I can ensure that the 32nd District is not without representation in the closing days, and I will retire and not seek re-election from this House, and I will devote my time taking care of myself and my family," says Bennett.

WDEL's Amy Cherry broke the news that Bennett was arrested for driving under the influence in Wilmington in April when he also sideswiped a parked police car.

Bennett first plead guilty to a drunken driving charge in February of 2011 and was sentenced to one-year probation.

Tuesday, he admitted he has a problem.

"I have learned of a disease that like cancer needs to be treated daily lest it consumes your life, your ability to make right choices. There is no magic pill for what in fact is a disease of the brain," says Bennett.

Bennett says he's gotten help over the past 50 days from the Dover Behavioral Health Center and will continue to seek treatment.
