VIDEO: Jack Markell honors Victor Maggioli

Before becoming Delaware's treasurer and eventually Governor, there was 14-year-old Jack Markell, a 1st and 3rd baseman under the direction of Victor Maggioli, a 24-year veteran coach in the Newark Babe Ruth League.

Markell had a chance to say thanks Wednesday night when Maggioli was one of four coaches inducted into the Delaware High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Magiolli coached several top players including former Oakland Athletics player Brian Lesher during his overall 44-year tenure in coaching.

While Markell wasn't the best player Maggioli ever had, the Governor says he learned a lot from his former coach.

"He was a fantastic coach, he helped me so much with my baseball. He really made me into a much better player. But more importantly he taught me about being a better person. I'm so grateful to him and he touched many thousands of players during his career."

Besides Maggioli, St. Elizabeth coach Tom Beddow, Smyrna-Clayton Little League coach David Jacobs, former player Jim Johnson, and Stahl Post coach Pat Ramone were also honored.
