Philadelphia sent 10 batters to the plate in the 2nd, with Mike Fontenot's 2-run homer and Shane Victorino's 2-run doubles the highlights off of Orioles' starter Jake Arrieta. Jim Thome and Carlos Ruiz also drove in runs in the inning. The six runs matched the highest game total for the Phillies during their just-concluded 1-6 homestand.
Victorino opened the scoring in the 1st by finishing off a set of back-to-back-to-back singles with his 29th RBI of the season.
The Orioles would cut into the lead off of Joe Blanton in the bottom of the 2nd with a 3-run rally including Chris Davis' RBI single and a 2-run double by Robert Andino.
After Arrieta struck out the side in the 3rd, he surrendered a 2-out, 4th inning double to Thome followed by Victorino's 8th home run of the season. Victorino match his career high RBI total set on April 14, 2010 at home against Washington.
Davis' 10th homered off the 4th for the Orioles to cut the lead to 9-4. In the 6th Blanton allowed a 2-out infield single to Endy Chavez before being removed and then Michael Schwimer served up a 2-run homer to J.J Hardy.
Blanton was charged with 5 runs and 9 in 6 2-3 innings but still improved to 5-6. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the 9th for his 16th save in 16 chances.
Arrieta (2-8) took the loss allowing 11 hits and 9 runs in 4 innings of work.
Thome went 3-for-5 with an RBI while playing DH in his first start since returning off the disabled list.
The Phillies snapped their 6-game losing streak, while the Orioles dropped their 8th game out of 11 to fall out of first place in the AL East.
Game two of the set is Saturday afternoon at 4:05. (3:30 WDEL)
