Surgeon reacts to mammogram policy change
By Peter MacArthur
A Delaware surgeon and board member of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is urging women to keep getting yearly mammograms and do self breast checks.
Dr. Wendy Newell is taken aback by a government task force recommendation that women
get mammograms every other year and stop checking themselves for lumps.
Newell says those annual check ups are saving lives. Audio Here
Newell says if the recommendation comes as an effort to save insurance companies the
cost of biopsies, it's ill conceived.
She says ultimately, doctors are bound to find women with more advanced cases of
breast cancer that require more costly treatments.
