Sussex County to have rotating prayers

The Sussex County Council has voted to have a rotation of prayers read at its meetings after a federal
judge ruled that reciting only the Lord's Prayer in the government meetings violates the First Amendment.
The News Journal reports the council voted 3-2 Tuesday to stop reciting the Lord's Prayer in every meeting but to preserve the prayer tradition by having a rotation of prayers. The council president would read a different nonsectarian prayer each week.
For years, the council has led the audience in the Lord's Prayer at meetings, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Four residents sued the county last year, saying the practice violates the constitutional protection against government establishing a religion.
In May, a judge ruled the plaintiffs would likely win their lawsuit.
