Early retirement for state prison guards approved
By Randall Chase, Associated Press

The state Senate has given final legislative approval to a bill allowing Delaware prison guards to retire with full pensions after 25 years of service instead of 30 years.

The bill was approved unanimously on Thursday and now goes Gov. Jack Markell for his signature.

Markell and Department of Corrections Commissioner Carl Danberg supported the early retirement option, which Danberg believes could help the DOC recruit and retain prison guards.

In return for being allowed to retire earlier, prison guards would have to contribute more of their pay to their pension plan.

The proposal is subject to approval by the Internal Revenue Service.
