5 taken to hospital in Milford mustard gas incident
By Mellany Armstrong

Five people were taken to the hospital Friday morning after ordnance leaking mustard gas was found in a clam processing facility in Milford.

Ryan Knowles of the Carlisle Fire Company says the company dug up the old shell along with clams and brought it back to the plant.

"We got dispatched to Sea Watch International for an explosive ordnance that was found. It appeared to have mustard gas inside, and a total of five patients were transported to the hospital for minor exposure," Knowles said.

Knowles says the facility at 242 S. Rehoboth Blvd. was evacuated and that Dover Air Force Base personnel and DNREC crews came to handle the device.

Knowles says the fire department is called regularly to deal with ordnance dug up from the ocean floor.
