Ground broken for C & D Canal recreation trail
By The Associated Press

Delaware officials will break ground Monday on a long-planned recreational trail along the C-and-D Canal.

Members of Delaware's congressional delegation plan to join representatives of the Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Highway Administration for the groundbreaking and official naming of the trail.

The roughly 16-mile shared-use trail along the north side of the canal will offer new recreational opportunities for hiking, biking, jogging, skating, bird-watching and horseback-riding.

Former Congressman Mike Castle began working with state and federal officials several years ago on a plan for recreational areas along the canal.

Senators Carper and Coons and Congressman Carney have followed up on the effort.
