Aberdeen Police Officer Charles Armetta, who graduated alongside his canine Maverick Thursday, tells me training was intense.

"Very grueling, a lot of running around, a lot of tracking, six months long, doing narcotics as well as tracking, biting, all kinds of stuff," says Armetta.

Maverick was afraid of the water at first, but has gotten used to it.

"You didn't get to see it, but he was clawing me, cutting up my neck trying to get out of the water," says Armetta, who laughs about it now.

New Castle County Police Chief Scott McLaren says the K9 unit helped the department seize $500,000 in drug money last year.

Armetta says Maverick was afraid of the water at first, but now he's gotten used to it.

He'll be taking part in all kinds of missions.

"We'll actually be on patrol, we're handling everything from missing person to suspect that fled the scene of a crime to narcotic calls, scanning vehicles as well as houses," Armetta says.

Now, Armetta can't imagine life without Maverick.

"The connection that I have with this dog, it's something to be said. He came, they call it green -- no training and I had no training -- and to see where we come from today, I mean it's something to be said," says Armetta.
