Newark National exploded for a 5-run 3rd inning as the Delaware State Little League champions defeated Northwest Washington (D.C.) 7-1 in the opening game of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday.

Joe Silan scored the opening run for Newark on a Clayton Hanson RBI single to make it 1-0. Two batters later Hanson scored on a single to center by Danny Miller. The big shot in the frame came off the bat of Dominic Petrucci, who connected on a bases-clearing 3-run triple to put Newark up 5-0.

After Northwest Washington scored on a Nathan Wagner RBI single in the 4th, Newark put the game away in the 6th on with a Nick Zegna reach-on-error and Miller's second RBI single of the game.

Newark's pitching combination of Drew Emory, Matt Theodorakis, Silan, and Hansen kept D.C. at bay, allowing just four hits and the one run, while striking out eight and only walking one batter.

The Delaware champions will face off with West Salisbury, Md. Saturday morning at 11am as pool play continues in Bristol, Ct.
