Families, police meet at National Night Out

Families meet up with local police agencies in Glasgow to build stronger communities while having fun at the same time.

New Castle County Police stopped by Glasgow Park Tuesday, not in response to a crime, but to host an educational event for local communities.

More than 100 turned people out for family fun and activities at National Night Out, which connects police officers with area residents like Wilmington resident Jen Jackson and her family.

"You run into them, you see them, you talk, it's a lot. It means a lot to us," she says.

Officers taught families about drug and crime awareness, but attractions like bomb defusing robots, police vehicles and martial arts shows caught the eye of many, like 10-year-old Praise Ighodaro of New Castle.

"The police are on horses, they're showing you around and how they do things. It's really fun, I'm having a blast," she says.

Bear resident Dawn Loveless says she enjoyed the attractions at the event but appreciates the opportunity to meet local police officers.

"It's really nice to see them here and see them out mingling with the community. It's a good thing," she says.

The event was created in 1984 and was hosted in an estimated 15,000 communities nationwide this year.
