No-Hitter pushes Newark National to Regional Finals

WDEL File: Newark National poses after winning Del. championship
Joe Silan and Drew Emory combined on a no-hitter as Newark National advanced to the Little League Mid-Atlantic Regional final with a 6-0 win over Salisbury, Maryland.

Matt Theodorakis powered a leadoff homer on the 6th pitch of the game to stake the Delaware champions to a 1-0 lead. It was Matt's 4th homer of the regional. The inning continued with a Clayton Hansen double and Danny Miller single, which set up a Nick Zegna RBI single to make it 2-0.

Silan then recorded two strikeouts in a pouring rain in the bottom half of the 1st inning before the game was stopped before the second inning could begin.

After a six hour rain delay, Silan stayed on the mound, and completely perplexed the West Salisbury hitters to the tune of 12 strikeouts, allowing just 3 walks and a hit batsman before being removed one batter into the 6th inning due to exceeding the 85-pitch limit.

Meanwhile, Newark had trouble hitting Salisbury reliever Malike Johnson who struck out 8 in 4 2-3 innings of work, but in the 5th Hansen was able to turn on pitch for his 2nd home run of the regionals to boost Newark's lead to 3.

Jeffrey Engelman started a 1-out rally in the 6th for Newark with his second hit of the game, before Johnson got the dangerous Matt Theodorakis to strike out. Joe Silan followed with a 5-pitch walk which put Johnson over his pitch limit.

Hansen welcomed Grason Winterbottom to the mound in the 6th with a single to left center which plated pinch runner Matt Ryan. Danny Miller then blooped a single into shallow right field to score two runs and give Delaware the 6-0 lead.

The only question left was the no-hitter, and after Silan had to be pulled, Emory made his third appearance of the regional a quick one, forcing a double play and strikeout to end Maryland's season.

Newark National will look to join the 2003 Naamans Little League squad as the only Delaware teams to play in Williamsport when they face off with the New Jersey champions Friday at 5pm.
