An upgrade to the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown could mean more planes and more jobs for the county's economy.

Sussex County leaders along with Governor Markell, Senator Carper and Congressman Carney were on-hand Friday as ground was broken on a $4.4 million project that will result in a longer runway, re-designed taxiways and improved lighting.

Ultimately the runway will be extended another 1,000 feet to 6,000 feet, meaning larger aircraft will be able to use the airport.

The first phase of the airport expansion will last through late 2013 with the full runway extension not being completed until 2017.

The project will cost $25 million.
