VIDEO: Highlights of Howard / Mount Pleasant

Howard quarterback Bryan Wright ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as the Wildcats took advantage of Mount Pleasant mistakes for a 42-26 win at Baynard Stadium Friday night.

The Wildcats jumped on the board midway through the opening quarter, after a bobbled punt snap by the Green Knights gave Howard the ball at the one yard line. Wright ran an option keeper off right tackle to put his team up 8-0 following a 2-point conversion.

Mount Pleasant's response came just 56 seconds later, as running back Fahti Carter got outside on a stretch run play thanks to some excellent blocking from his wide receivers, and then outran the Howard secondary 70 yards for the touchdown. The two point conversion failed however, keeping Howard ahead 8-6.

Mount then was able to force a Howard punt, but the return was muffed at the one yard line, setting up Wright once again on the option, to push the lead to 16-6 after another 2-point try.

Marvell Watts then made the two critical plays of the second quarter, first he used a jump cut to complete a 9-yard touchdown to make it 24-6, and then on the ensuing Mount drive, a bobbled pitch bounded right into his arms, and he raced 40 yards for the fumble recovery touchdown.

After the Green Knights again fumbled, this time in the final minute of the half, Wright found Jeray Smith on a 17 yard connection to make it 36-6 at the break.

Mount Pleasant's Lonnie Williams engineered a fine drive to start the second half, ending with a 27 yard connection with Shaquille Lewis who outjumped the Howard defense to cut the game to 36-12, but Howard came right back with fullback Raekwon Wells diving in from 1 yard out to take a 42-12 advantage.

The Green Knights tacked on a couple of late touchdowns, including a kickoff return score immediately after Howard's last touchdown, but it wasn't enough.
