Special Agent John Kelleghan with the federal Department of Homeland Security tells WDEL News the victim's father notified authorities in June of last year, after he found text messages on his 14-year-old daughter's Ipod referring to a sexual encounter with David Gellad at Newark's Courtyard Marriott hotel.
He says, "We were able to interview the victim, who allowed us to take over her identity on the Internet, and we were able to verify, based on her interviews, and the activities with this target, and we were able to get a criminal complaint against him, and we were able to effect his arrest."
Agents arrested Gellad when he traveled to Vermont with his family the following month.
Kelleghan says this case points up the need for parents to monitor their childrens' internet activity, even if the kids aren't happy about it.
