|VIDEO: Highlights of Delaware vs. Sam Houston State|
Jaquetta May recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as the Elena Delle Donne-less No. 11 Delaware Blue Hens defeated Sam Houston State 65-31 in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT.
Delaware's first-team Preseason All-American missed the contest due to complications of Lyme Disease, and her team struggled in the opening half, taking 4:31 to get their first basket, and had just 3 field goals in the first 12:18.
Despite their offensive struggles, the Blue Hens were only down 11-7 thanks to a tenacious defense that forced 10 first half turnovers. Meanwhile, the offense finally got in gear, posting a 19-5 run to end the half with a 26-16 advantage.
The second half brought a better offensive rhythm for the Blue and Gold, with the Hens outshooting the Bearkats 45 percent to 18 percent. Lauren Carra, who sat most of the first half with two early fouls, posted 10 of her 12 points in the second stanza.
The 31 points allowed by the defense is the lowest since giving up 28 in a 66-28 win over Towson in 2002.
Trumae Lucas led Delaware with 14 points. Delaware will face off with Big East foe Georgetown at home in the second round Sunday at 2pm.
