Wilm. Planning Commission recommends glove maker's proposal

A company that makes gloves for the military and law enforcement agencies is one step closer to opening a new facility in Wilmington.

The City Council's Planning Commission has recommended that Delaware-based Masley Enterprises should be granted a special use permit to perform light manufacturing in a new facility on Jessup Street.
Planning commission chair Polly Weir says if the permit is approved, it will be a positive decision. The recommendation will head to the city's Zoning Board of Approvals.
"This is the kind of thing we like to do, because this is a small business owner who is going to bring jobs to the city," Weir says.

Company CEO Frank Masley says if the approval is granted, it means his company could move into the two-story 20,000 square foot riverfront property, which is located in a Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone).
"There's an old manufacturing building there already, and we plan to revive it, clean it up and prepare it for use so that we can have about 40 people there working, making gloves for the military," says Masley

Masley says that since the proposed facility is located inside of a HUBZone, it could provide a competitive advantage while bidding for government contracts. He says those areas usually have high poverty or unemployment rates.
"They sometimes will prefer to award contracts to companies located in these areas so that they can help the cities, and they could be rural areas as well. They will help those areas with business," he says.
